Deconstruction of the original Champlain Bridge

The work is continuing on schedule and was 95% complete as of May 31, 2023.

• 1 abutment on the Île des Sœurs side.
• 50 concrete spans between Île des Sœurs and the St. Lawrence Seaway dike.
• 7 steel spans over the St. Lawrence Seaway.
• 53 piers and the remaining piers that will be preserved for the Héritage Champlain project.
• 45 pier footings and the work that will continue until fall 2023.
• 92 modular trusses in the marine sector.
• 555 components have been delivered to the storage site and will be provided to university research bodies or reused.

Section 5 : St. Lawrence River

After the restricted period in the marine environment, work will continue on the 40W pier kept for the Héritage Champlain project and the temporary jetty on the Île des Soeurs side will be removed.

Section 6 : Seaway

The remaining operations will involve finalizing the removal of two concrete pier footings on the temporary St. Lawrence Seaway dike. These operations will begin after the restriction period for in-water work, which ends on either July 1 or August 1 depending on the sector.

The 2W pier will be preserved and enhanced in the original alignment of the original Champlain Bridge.

Section 7 : Brossard

The remaining operations will involve finalizing the removal of three concrete pier footings on the temporary Brossard dike. These operations will begin after the restriction period for in-water work, which ends on either July 1 or August 1 depending on the sector.

• Jetty: The jetty allows the dismantling of structural elements of the bridge in areas on the shore where the use of barges is not possible due to the shallow water. 
• Pier: The pier of a bridge, or the “leg”, is an intermediate support supporting the deck of the structure. 
• Footing: A footing of a bridge, or the “foot”, is the base that takes up the loads of the bridge. 
• Abutment: The abutment of a bridge is the part located on the shore intended to support the weight of a deck.  
• Deck: The deck of a bridge is a load-bearing structure that supports the loads of road traffic. 
• Span: The span of a bridge is the part between two piers or between a pier and an abutment. 
• Pier cap: The pier cap of a bridge is the upper part of a pier when the deck rests on it by means of one or more supports.
