Fish habitat and wetland compensation projects
The deconstruction of the original Champlain Bridge will have an impact on fish habitat and wetlands in the area throughout the work.
Compensation projects will therefore be carried out to minimize this impact.
Three compensation projects will be put in place:
- Partial dismantling of the Estacade and Brossard service piers.
- Complete removal of some piers and pier footings from the original Champlain Bridge.
- Development of a piece of farmland into a grassy floodplain for a conservation project in Saint-Ignace-de-Loyola.
The loss of fish habitat is estimated to be 6.5 ha, and the proposed compensation projects will offset a total area of 7.9 ha, which represents a net gain in fish habitat of 1.4 ha. Since the impacts of the deconstruction work will be temporary (3 years) and the compensation projects will be permanent, this initiative will have a positive long-term impact on productivity in the St. Lawrence River.
